What is scouting?
Scouting is an international, uniformed organisation aimed at developing young people by allowing them to undertake fun and exciting activities in a controlled environment. Skills that can be practised in the scouting movement include camping, hiking, navigation, cooking and fire lighting among others.
Who can be in scouting?
Scouting is open to any young person, of any creed or colour, mental or physical capabilities and of any sex.
Is it expensive to join?
To be a member of the scouting movement we ask for an annual subscription. A certain allocation of this money goes directly to the Scout Association and the rest is used to cover necessities, such as insurance and maintenance of the HQ. In addition, money towards camps is asked for to cover the cost of food and activities. The 16th Purley is a registered charity and all subscriptions go directly into the activities provided. All leaders are unpaid and give up their time to plan and run the events.
Can I see what scouting is like before I join?
Yes, of course. Contact the relevant leader for the section and it can be arranged.
Is scouting safe for children?
We take child protection very seriously. Please take the time to read a copy of the Child Protection Policy. In addition, all adventurous activities follow strict Health and Safety guidelines and risk assessments are carried out prior to the activity.
All 16th Purley leaders are trained to the requisite level before being permitted to lead activities.
